Processing Engineer


The Processing Engineer works with our DogStar Kitchens Team in Auburn, KY, to continually optimize and improve the dry food production and Freeze Dry processes.  The candidate will support and lead existing projects and identify, prioritize and lead future projects to optimize personnel safety, food safety, and process effectiveness and efficiency. The primary focus of this position will be project management of process equipment installation, coordination, optimization as well as continuous improvement initiatives. This position supports company initiatives to achieve goals and objectives set by our Mission of making Biologically Appropriate Foods from Fresh Regional Ingredients, Never Outsourced, and the Champion Petfoods Vision: To Be Trusted By Pet Lovers Everywhere.

This position will report directly to the Kitchen Manager, but will also function as a technical resource role that may be called upon by the Morinville kitchen, corporate office, or various departments and/or peers across the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support maintenance across the facility with process improvement, cost reduction, equipment evaluation, redesign, upgrade and installation, area layout and material flows.
  • Possesses practical working knowledge of the following areas:
    • Mass Balance Calculations.
    • Capacity Usage Studies.
    • Statistical Process Control (SPC).
    • Project Management Fundamentals.
    • Yield Optimization.
    • Waste Reduction.
  • Provide technical assistance and support, as required.
  • Help to define risk categories and ensures appropriate prioritization.
  • Assist with 3rd party and regulatory audits as needed.
  • Other responsibilities, as assigned.

Education and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Food Process preferred).
  • Five to ten years of experience across one or more industries.
  • Design and project management experience in the Food and Beverage industry (dry pet food processing is considered an asset).
  • Familiarity with evaluation, functionality, and sanitary design and implementation of equipment.
  • Experience with process technology documentation, including process flow sheets, piping and instrumentation diagrams, process control strategies, and process specifications.
  • Experience with process technology including extrusion, mixing and blending, flow control, steam/condensate and refrigeration systems, Nitrogen/CO2 cooling/freezing methods and equipment, and CIP systems.
  • Experience with Allen Bradley PLC.
  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, team, and organizational leadership and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge of good manufacturing processes (GMPs), Food Safety, HACCP, and Quality Controls.
  • Ability to set priorities, utilize and coordinate resources, and manage projects from start to finish with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to effectively work on a team, both as a leader and member.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Proficiency in AutoCAD is considered an asset.
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • 24/7 availability may be required.
  • Willing to work any shift as necessary.
  • Travel to off-site locations may be required.
