Project Controls Specialist, Capacity Business Alignment


Reporting to the Director, Capital Projects, the Project Controls Specialist, Capacity Business Alignment is the primary person responsible for forecasting, tracking, analyzing and reporting, project and program financial data and results for Champion Petfoods LP’s major capital projects.  This includes the analysis, documenting and reporting of variances to plan and providing key insights into budgetary risks and/or opportunities. The Project Controls Specialist, Capacity Business Alignment is responsible for supporting several projects through successful completion of the financial analysis and reconciliation process and the implementation of project management financial controls.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for providing key financial project and accounting support to all members of the project team
  • Perform various financial analyses, such as reconciliations and variance analysis;
  • Support preparation of budgets and forecasts to project and track financial metrics
  • Track expenditures and oversee the spending approval process in accordance with contract terms;
  • Reviewing contractor cost reports and progress
  • Work directly with the Finance and Administration Department to design appropriate financial analysis tools, report and reconciliations, and to effectively manage and track vendor payments
  • Provide cost and scheduling reporting for a portfolio of capital and expense projects, through all project phases, to enable efficient execution of engineering projects
  • Understanding of project phases, activities performed in each phase and deliverables at the end of each phase
  • Understand, analyze and report progress measurements for engineering, procurement and construction
  • Prepare cost reports and cash flow forecasts for projects at various stages of execution
  • Strong working knowledge of project related coding structures (Work Breakdown Structure, Construction Work Progress)
  • Full understanding of cross- functional interfaces (engineering, procurement, construction, finance, document control and project controls)
  • Contingency management
  • Consolidated analysis of budgets to senior management

Education and Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 3+ years experience in a similar capacity with previous experience strongly desired in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, payables management, fixed asset management and financial analysis
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have completed their CA or CMA designation
  • Excellent knowledge of Excel and MS Office applications (Word, Access, PowerPoint)
  • Previous experience in a financial role in a construction environment is an asset
  • Solid knowledge of accounting functions
