FIRST ALERT PROGRAM
Champion Petfoods is proud to be a member of the First Alert Pet Food Recall Program. The First Alert Pet Food Recall Program is a voluntary effort and consists of a coalition of responsible pet food manufacturers who have agreed to alert their customers and consumers in the event one of our products is involved in a pet food recall. Champion Petfoods is committed to the safety of our products and to the health and well being of our end consumer - your companion cats and dogs. In the unlikely event of a recall of one of our products, we will contact you immediately with information regarding the products that are affected, the reason for the recall, and any steps that may need to be taken. We will post this information on our website, and will notify our customers and the appropriate regulatory agencies.
By sending us a message with the subject set as FIRST ALERT PROGRAM you are indicating your willingness to have your contact information stored and accessed by Champion Petfoods to be used in the unlikely event of a product recall.
ORIJEN & ACANA - THE DIFFERENCES
Sold in more than 50 countries worldwide, Champion Petfoods has produced ACANA brand dog and cat foods since 1985.
In 2008, ACANA was reformulated to better express Champion's mandate of producing "Biologically Appropriate Pet Foods from Fresh Regional Ingredients. Formulation changes included increasing both the quantity and variety of animal ingredients, introducing fresh meats & fish, elevating meat proteins, and reducing grains & carbohydrates. These changes substantially enhanced ACANA's nutritional quality and feeding performance.
What are the differences between ORIJEN and ACANA formulations? While there are many differences between ACANA and ORIJEN, both diets reflect our belief in "Biologically Appropriateness". Five main points of difference are summarized below:
- MEAT CONCENTRATION: ORIJEN is made with 70-75% meat ingredients while ACANA has between 40 to 65%, depending on the formula.
- AMOUNT OF PROTEIN: ORIJEN diets range between 38% and 42% protein, while ACANA features protein levels of 29-34%.
- AMOUNT OF CARBOHYDRATE: ORIJEN diets range from 18-22% of carbohydrate, while ACANA diets are typically in the 28-30% carbohydrate range.
- AMOUNT OF FRESH MEAT: ORIJEN is made with 28-33% of fresh meats, compared with ACANA which ranges from 9-15% of fresh meats.
- VARIETY OF FRESH MEAT: ORIJEN contains a minimum of 5 fresh meats, compared to ACANA which contains 3 different fresh meat ingredients.
Put simply, we believe ORIJEN is the best dry dog or cat food available worldwide. While lower in protein and total meat content than ORIJEN, ACANA provides unbeatable value and a price point that makes Biologically Appropriate pet foods accessible to a wider range of pet lovers.
TRANSITIONING
Dogs and cats are often fed the same food, which means a sudden food change makes it difficult for their digestive systems to adapt that is why it's important to introduce the new food gradually. Going slowly will give your dog or cat time to adjust to their new food and will also reduce the chances of digestive upset.
Start by mixing 25% new food with 75% old food. Slowly change the proportions over the next three to five days by gradually increasing the amount of ORIJEN or ACANA and decreasing the amount of old food. At the end of this transitioning process, you should be feeding 100% ORIJEN or ACANA.

SAMPLES AND COUPONS
SAMPLES
Although we don't offer ORIJEN or ACANA in sample sizes, we do produce a specially-priced 400G (0.88LB) "TRIAL-SIZE" ORIJEN and ACANA products that you can find at any ORIJEN or ACANA retailer for around $2.50. The idea of the 400g product is to provide a full bowlful (at low cost) which will give you and your dog or cat a clear indication of ORIJEN'S or ACANA's performance before investing in a larger package size. The Trial Size bags can be purchased at any ORIJEN or ACANA retailer - please check the store locator on our website for a retailer that is closest to you (www.championpetfoods.com).
COUPONS
I am sorry we do not have coupons. Our marketing strategy is a bit different than most manufacturers. Rather than spend our marketing funds on coupons, advertising etc., we instead put our budget towards purchasing the very best regional ingredients (ORIJEN features a minimum of five FRESH ,never frozen, regional meats), using the best technology in our family owned factory to truly make the best dog and cat food.
CANNED FOOD
We have no plans for ORIJEN or ACANA in cans at present or in the near future. A big part of our philosophy is producing our own foods from fresh regional ingredients, exclusively within our own factory here in Alberta, Canada. As canned food is a very different production process, almost all canned pet foods are made by one or two very large canning companies. We are just not comfortable with the idea of having ORIJEN or ACANA products made outside of our own facilities.
TREATS
Making treats is a very different production process from producing kibble, almost all treat production is outsourced by pet food producers. A big part of our philosophy at Champion Petfoods is producing our own foods from fresh regional ingredients, exclusively within our own factory here in Alberta, Canada. In keeping with this philosophy we are acquiring the new equipment necessary to produce our own Biologically Appropriate treats.
From concept to reality can be a slow process, but we promise that the results will be worth the wait! Please look for them sometime in 2010.
